Husbands and Wives in a Well-Ordered family

Well-Ordered Families
Life in the colonies for husbands and wives were very much as they are today. The husbands were the head of the household which means it was his responsibility for all of the duties in the house. The wife had expectations as well, she was to love, honor, and care for husband at all time regardless of the situation. If there was a problem between the two it was believed to have been the Devil’s work and they disappointed God and his ways of a good marriage. Even if the wife or husband weren’t satisfied with each other they made promises to be together and love one another no matter what.
It surprised me that even during era times in the colonies the husbands were still expected to treat their wives with respect and the same for the wives. I never thought this was expected from the husband I thought that he was allowed to treat his wife in any manner he pleased. This shows a comparison between marriages today and the colonial era. No matter any situation or way of life the husband and wife should always show support for each other. Even today husbands are expected to take care of the home, while the wife is expected to take care of their husband by cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the household at all times.

Ok, although some people would disagree with you about the role of women today. I think the success rate of marriages would be much better if people focused on this belief,"if the wife or husband weren’t satisfied with each other they made promises to be together and love one another no matter what".

Well written post that addressed the topics thoroughly.

Hey, Tipporah!

I think this post was well written, and is very true. what most people do not know is that even during colonial and Puritanical times, women had more respect than is generally thought. I agree that many of the "wifely duties" have not changed much. But now, many single moms are fulfilling both maternal and paternal roles, such as going to work and earning a living, as well as cooking and cleaning and rearing the children.

Good job on all of your posts!
